Rabbit Room Arts (the 'Arts' Part)

So, in large part this blog is simply a tool meant to highlight the Importance of Rabbits.

(You knew this, didn't you?)

As you may notice, however, it is called Rabbit Room ARTS, not just RABBIT or even just RABBIT ROOM. The art part is somewhat important, too.

(I should note here that it is important to me. If rabbits had their know what would happen.)

In any case, since Rabbit Room Arts denotes an art part, I thought I would tell you about what I'm up to painting wise.

If you used to read the Rabbits' and my last blog, Ordinary Enchantment, then you know that I went on a trip to Italy in October of 2010 and that I took a LOAD of pictures. Over a thousand in my 3 week stay. My plan was to come home and paint lots of paintings based on my photos.

But, you know how life has a way of getting in the way of all your fun sometimes? Well, that happened a little, and here it is March of 2012, and I am Just now getting around to my plan.

Oh, well. These things happen.

At any rate, I am going to be participating in an event here in Erie called Arts and Drafts. It is held here twice a year at our local Brewpub, the Brewerie, and it involves (as the name would suggest) Art and Drafts. Also Music, though that falls under the category of Art.

It is this event, coming up March 29, 30, and 31, that has lit a fire under my painting hand and has made me get going on my now years old plan.

Today, I thought I'd show you a few things I'm working on that are actually in process. I always enjoy seeing the process of other artists. (It may not be interesting to you, so if it's not, LOOK AWAY. Also, if it's not, you've just wasted a few minutes reading this for no reason, and I am sorry about that. Feel free to review Tuesday's Danger Bunny.)

If you are interested, then by all means, look now!

It starts with a pencil sketch:

Then I do a rough draft in black paint to lay it out:

Next, I start adding color:

And another example of added color (sorry about the glare):
Of course, these are four different paintings (I usually work on a few at once), but it gives you the idea.

Those of you who are artists out there:  what is your process?

Alternatively, send a picture of a Rabbit.

  1. I can't figure out how to post a bunny picture, even though I have a nice one. As for my artistic process, I am all over the place, never the same process twice!

  2. I am not a painter, but I love to see others artistic processes... maybe someday..
Love the idea of Arts and Drafts, sounds like fun. Your comment about music falling under the category of art reminds me of something that Joni Mitchell once said (on a live recording of The Circle Game) she said,

“The major difference between the performing arts to me and being a painter you know, like a painter does a painting, and he does a painting. That’s it, you know, he’s had the joy of creating it and he hangs it on some wall, somebody buys it, somebody buys it again, or maybe nobody buys it, and it sits up in a loft somewhere ‘till he dies. But he’s never, i mean, nobody ever says to him, nobody ever said to Van Gogh, ‘Paint A Starry Night again, man.’ You know. He painted it, that was it.” LOL!

Hope you enjoy Arts and Drafts. Looks like you're going to have some great pieces to share!
